We recently came across this workshop/presentation designed for aspiring sportscasters. This event is not affiliated with Specs Howard School (It is run by the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists or AFTRA). --------- “SO YOU WANT TO BE A SPORTSCASTER” Hear from four working Detroit sportscasters who have decades of experience among them. They will share their advice on finding work, honing your craft and becoming a "player" in the competitive field of sports broadcasting. WHEN: Monday, January 25, 2010 TIME: 6:30 P.M. – 9:30 P.M. WHERE: AFTRA Office Vanguard Center 23800 West Ten Mile Road Southfield, MI 48033 Presenters Jim Brandstatter is the color radio commentator for the Detroit Lions and Michigan Wolverines football, and hosts a college football Television program called "Inside Michigan Football." He is also was a player under legendary coach Bo Schembechler. He is a two-time President of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association. Mario Impemba Emmy-Award winning Broadcaster Mario Impemba has been the Detroit Tigers play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports Detroit since 2002, and before that, was the radio voice of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Impemba is the voice of the Oakland University Basketball Grizzlies, and he has a website about baseball broadcasting called "The Sound of Baseball." Tony Ortiz Tony Ortiz started at 1270 WXYT in 1986 and worked as a producer for Spartan basketball and football. Ortiz moved to WWJ Newsradio 950 in 1991 and went on to produce Detroit Lions football. While at KTRH in Huston, Ortiz covered 2 championship runs with the Houston Rockets. Ortiz returned home and currently is a reporter and Lions Beat Reporter on Detroit's Sports Powerhouse 97.1FM 1270AM. Ken Kal Ken Kal begins his 15th season as the radio play-by-play man for the Red Wings. Prior to joining the Wings, Kal handled the play-by-play duties for University of Michigan hockey for 11 years on Ann Arbor AM stations.
